Krewes
What is a “krewe”?
From Wikipedia: A krewe (pronounced in the same way as “crew”) is an organization that puts on a parade and or a ball for the Carnival season. The term is best known for its association with New Orleans Mardi Gras, but is also used in other Carnival celebrations . . . Krewe members are assessed fees in order to pay for the parade and/or ball. Criteria for krewe membership varies, ranging from exclusive organizations largely limited to relatives of previous members to other organizations open to anyone able to pay the membership fee. Krewes with low membership fees may also require members to work to help build and decorate the parade floats and make their own costumes . . . Some krewes also have other events like private dances or parties for members throughout the year. Some also make a point of supporting charities and good causes.
Start your own krewe!
Have you always wanted to be in the parade, but not sure how to get started? We’re here to help! Even if you want to start with a krewe of ONE (you), it’s worth the effort. Go check out this post from 2023’s parade for some ideas on unique entry ideas for one or more people: https://fayettevillemardigras.com/do-you-have-what-it-takes-the-answer-is-yes/
Have some friends who like to have fun? Then get your people together and start your own krewe, and plan to build a float and participate in the parade. It’s a great way to beat the winter blues and have fun with your friends! Your krewe may want to build a float, organize a walking, dancing or performance troupe, decorate some cars, have a ball, or just show up to enjoy the festivities together. Krewes normally participate in the Fat Saturday Parade of Fools, as well as Fat Tuesday on Dickson. Want some help/advice in building a krewe? LET US KNOW… we’re glad to help!
